Few realize it but if you want to improve your golf game all you have to do is improve your swing technique. Ask just about any golfer and they'll tell you that developing good swing technique from the outset is crucial. Once you develop a good swing you want to practice, practice, and practice some more. If your handicap is astronomical and you can't remember the last time you hit par read the tips below on developing better swing technique.
Relax. Take a deep breath. Now swing. Don't try to crush the ball... what you want to do is take an easy and relaxed swing as that'll give you your best shot at hitting the ball straight. Swinging from your heels is a bad idea because it makes it ten times harder to strike the golf ball with the sweet spot of the clubface.
Something else you should strongly consider in order to hit the ball more accurately and to hit more fairways is to use your 3 wood exclusively for driving. The 3 wood is shorter then the typical driver today and it also has a much smaller head which makes it easier for you to hit the ball accurately. You will give up some distance but if you have a decent golf swing you'll hit many more fairways.
One of the biggest mistakes novices make is they just walk up to the ball and take a swing at it. That doesn't work and it usually results in a bad shot. Walk up to the tee and address the ball properly which means you want to put the clubface directly behind the golf ball and the clubface should be pointed at the hole.
Before you hit the ball you want to approach it with an athletic stance. You want to have your feet about shoulder width apart, your knees slightly bent, your lower back slightly arched and your upper torso leaning forward just a bit.
In order to hit the ball accurately you have to line up your clubface with the hole and then place it directly behind your golf ball. Then ensures a straight line path to the hole and now you want to make sure that your shoulders and feet are parallel to that imaginary line from your ball to the hole.
When you begin your swing I don't recommend taking the club too far back as this only results in inaccuracy. The key is to return the club to the exact position that you started off with your initial address of the ball. If you can do that you can hit a straight shot.
Golf is a game that is all about precision and accuracy. It does you no good to drive the ball 300 yards if you're driving it on to the next hole over. Some of the best advice I ever got on the golf course was to take an easy and relaxed swing and to stop trying to crush the ball. Remember the key is to connect a golf ball with the sweet spot on the clubface and that is much easier to accomplish with an easy and relaxed swing.
